In January 2011, I established a business consultancy called OutLore Consulting. I created the word "OutLore" myself; it means....insight derived from an external source. I made this decision after twelve years as Managing Director of respected Melbourne-based funeral company, Tobin Brothers.

OutLore Consulting provides small to medium sized Australian businesses, across a range of industries, with creative and practical advice in six core areas:

  • Strategy Formulation
  • Marketing & Branding
  • People Development
  • Transactions & Negotiations
  • Succession Planning
  • Service Innovation

When you engage OutLore Consulting, you get me. Unlike some consultants, I don't push a particular model or theory; instead, I bring a wealth of hands-on experience in managing and growing an innovative and successful medium-sized business. I therefore understand your issues and challenges, and speak your language. And I know that sometimes you're too busy doing, to be able to improve and grow your business. Which is why OutLore Consulting clients seek my input in the above areas, without my expertise being a permanent part of their payroll.

During my career I have acquired a broad range of qualifications, skills and experiences, including:

  • Arts/Law Degree at Monash University from 1984 to 1988
  • Practising solicitor from 1989 to 1993
  • Master of Business Administration at Melbourne University from 1997 to 1998
  • Managing Director of Tobin Brothers Pty Ltd from 1998 to 2011
  • Chairman of Amalgamated Casket Company Pty Ltd from 2002 to 2011
  • Secretary of the Tobin Brothers Foundation from 2004 to 2011
  • President of the Australian Funeral Director's Association (Victorian Division) from 2008 to 2010
  • Chairman of the Victorian chapter of Family Business Australia from 2007 to 2008

Through OutLore Consulting, I am able to draw on these experiences and credentials to the benefit of my clients.

How I Work

I work with my clients in three main ways:

  • Ongoing Retainers, such as providing a regular advisory service, and mentoring & coaching of key staff
  • Business Enhancement Programs, such as facilitating Strategic Planning and Branding Alignment workshops, and undertaking a comprehensive Business Diagnostic
  • One-off Assignments, such as providing guidance with transactions and negotiations, succession planning, and human resources and customer service initiatives

OutLore Lore

Whilst every business, industry and market is different, over the years I have embraced a number of "universal business truths", which OutLore Consulting clients will see coming through in my advice and recommendations, including the following:

  • Price is a powerful indicator of quality.....are you proud of, or an apologist for your price?
  • If you keep doing the same things, you'll keep getting the same results
  • Some of the best ideas come from the "factory floor" or from outside of your organisation
  • Great service isn't about meeting your customers' expectations, it's about exceeding you provide real service, or lip service?
  • Customers want an experience not a product or service
  • The key to success is deciding what you want to be famous for
